J-1 On Campus Employment

J-1 students are permitted to work on campus for 20 hours per week while classes are in session. Approval for on campus employment is valid for 12 months unless the student's program ends earlier.

Students are eligible to work on campus if:

  • they are in good academic standing with the university
  • they are studying full time
  • employment is no more than 20 hours per week while classes are in session
  • the responsible officer (an ISS advisor) approves the employment before the student begins working and the approval is in writing

Once a student has been offered on campus employment, they must complete the J-1 Program Sponsor Letter request. The student will then receive an email to pick up an updated DS-2019 and the sponsor letter. Students are not permitted to work until they have the letter and the DS-2019 with the on campus work authorization.
